Subject: Does startpage.com work for anonymous browsing?
To: colbydenver@gmail.com
When asked that question recently, I decided to check out startpage. As soon as
I clicked on a link, I noticed that the "s" in https disappeared. That did not
sound good so I checked with an expert in the field. His answer:
====================
I see your point--once you click on a link, that site will record that you are
coming from (or being 'referred by') www.startpage.com, and your browser
history will show the end site too. And unless you're running TOR too, your IP
address will be recorded by the link-destination site.
"I'm using the FireFox Extension "HTTPS Everywhere" and I search "law offices"
on startpage.com. When I clicked on a link to a law office from the StartPage
search results, the 's' disappeared for me too. That tells us the law offices'
website does not yet support "HTTPS Everywhere" (and if I were not also using
the FireFox Extension "RefControl") they might be able to see I'm being
referred by www.startpage.com.
But (1) because I'm running TOR my true IP address is masked and (2) because
I'm using RefControl, it appears to the law office that I came to their site
via http://www.oconnorshannon.ie/. [I can choose to make it appear like I'm
coming from ANY other site with RefControl. The real estate office in Ireland
seems innocuous enough.]
Conclusion: Startpage.com, (like TOR, HTTPS Everywhere, and RefControl) is one
piece of the machine. If parts are missing it won't work. If things are
configured wrong, it will run rough or intermittently. But when things are
in-tune, it should purr like a kitten.
Surfing the web semi-privately requires planning, just like getting a private
bank account. You have to have all the steps planned out and all the tools in
order to make it work. If you don't have a ghost address, a private telephone
number, the properly chosen ID, a good cover story, or are not properly
dressed, and you generally look out of place or nervous - it ain't gonna work
smoothly.
